The Barred Owl is one of the most common owls in the eastern part of the United States. They have been moving to western states in recent years where Northern Spotted Owls can be found. Unfortunately Barred Owls will move the very similar but smaller Northern Spotted Owl out of their territories. There is a plan to kill approximately half a million Barred Owls to help save the Northern Spotted Owl.

At a job site that I have been a wildlife monitor on, I have seen owl pellets so I knew that some owls were present. Today I was able to see a Barred Owl the mostly likely source of the owl pellets that I have seen. This is the first Barred Owl that I have seen at this site so it was a nice surprise!
