Many birdwatchers, both locals and visitors, often struggle to distinguish between the Antillean Nighthawk and the Common Nighthawk. The differences between the two species are subtle, but in my images, I highlight the key identifying features of each. Antillean Nighthawks can be found in South Florida from the middle keys south to Key West, and their primary breeding range extends from the Bahamas south and eastward to Hispaniola. Some can also be found in the Lesser Antilles, although they are less common there. The discovery of their wintering grounds is a very recent development. These birds leave their breeding areas and migrate to northern South America, where they spend the winter months before returning in April.
