My friends George and Sherry wanted me to try and find them Orange-winged Parrots. The natural range of Orange-winged Parrots is from Northern South America south to the middle of South America. Of the parrots currently found in the South Florida area, this one is more common than other species. Like many other exotic species, there is a population of these here in South Florida. It is best to search for them early in the morning or late in the day. We started in the late afternoon and searched the Pinecrest area and South Miami. We had a couple of Blue and Yellow Macaws and heard some Chestnut-fronted Macaws. After quite some time late in the afternoon I heard what I thought were Orange-winged Parrots. I was able to get a glimpse of them flying and had to drive fast to keep up with them. I saw a tall tree where they landed and stopped the car. We had distant looks of them high in a tree but it turned out that they were not Orange-winged Parrots. I was surprised to see a Red-crowned Parrot and a Lilac-crowned Parrot. After we were able to get a good look at these two species we headed off to dinner. We went to Joe’s Stone Crab on Miami Beach! This is an iconic restaurant here in South Florida that opened in 1913. The food was excellent as well as the service, it was a nice way to end the day. We will try again another day for the Orange-winged Parrots, we will find them!
