My friends George and Sherry asked if I could find them White-eyed Parakeets, I said sure and we set a date to search for them. George and Sherry met me at my house and off we went in search of White-eyed Parakeets. White-eyed Parakeets are an exotic species in South Florida, they are native to a large part of South America. This species was not too uncommon in the cagebird trade. Birds in captivity have escaped their cages in large enough numbers to become established in South Florida’s semitropical urban environment. The exotic plantings in the huge areas of the urban environment have made it conducive for many, many exotic species. The list of exotic species of every kind in South Florida is HUGE! I guess there is no turning back as things have changed tremendously.
We tried one area in the South end of Miami/Dade County without luck. We then headed north to another area and parked our car. As we were walking I heard and saw a pair of White-eyed Parakeets. Searching for green birds in a green tree can be a huge challenge. Fortunately, the birds were vocal and we were able to track them down and get great views! George and Sherry were very, very happy with our looks and we were able to get awesome photos!
