It is always a beautiful thing when you are slowly driving and hear a rare bird singing. That was the case today on a construction site that I’m currently working at doing wildlife monitoring. I heard a Yellow-green Vireo singing today, they sound like a mixture of a House Sparrow chirping mixed with the song of a Black-whiskered Vireo. This particular bird included the call note of a Great Crested Flycatcher which was really cool! Most vireos will include songs or calls of other birds in their own songs. For the fun of it, I used the Merlin I.D. app to see what Merlin thought the song was. It is pretty amazing as it picked out the Great Crested Flycatcher call but it was not able to pick out the Yellow-green Vireo song. The good thing is that Merlin is a work in progress and will only get better in time.
I have included some photos of the vireo as well as the song that I recorded. I hope to hear and see the bird tomorrow, we will find out then!
Here is a recording of the song from today.
